Carole Hillenbrand
Historian Carole Hillenbrand ranks high among the world's top crusades scholars. As Professor of Islamic History at the University of Edinburgh, her work focusing on Islamic perspectives of the crusades, resulting from her use of Arab sources, has set her apart from most other crusades historians who traditionally research the subject only from the perspective of the crusaders.

In addition to winning the respect of her peers, Dr. Hillenbrand's efforts have also won her considerable monetary compensation. In 2005 she won the prestigious Saudi Arabian based King Faisal Internation Prize for her book, “The Crusades: Islamic Perspectives,“ which examines the period between 1099 to 1291 from a Muslim perspective rather than the traditional European perspective. The cash value of the award was no less than $200,000 dollars. In presenting the award, the King Faisal Foundation cited Dr. Hillenbrand's “objectivity, preciseness and clarity of thinking” in her groundbreaking research.
