Popular perceptions of an event (or events) are often quite different from scholarly perceptions. The Crusades are no different in that popular understandings of the Crusades are generally uninformed by the most recent scholarship. On many issues, respected Crusades historians, such as Jonathan Riley-Smith and Thomas Madden, have effectively disproven or cast considerable suspicion on common assumptions about the Crusades. This page provides numerous articles that reflect the divergence between scholarly and popular understandings of the Crusades.
