| Gilbert of Tournai | |||||||
| The scholar and friar Gilbert of Tournai (b.circa 1200- d.1284) was actively involved with the preaching of the cross during the reign of St. Louis IX. According to scholar Christoph T. Maier, at least three crusades sermons by Gilbert survive as part of "one of the most comprehensive and also most popular corpora of model sermons by any individual author of the later middle ages." (1) Gilbert's impressive career was long and varied. According to Dr. Gary Macy, Gilbert first studied at the University of Paris, becoming a master of Theology in 1256, then later taught at his alma mater. Gilbert then followed Eudes of Rosny as Master of the Franciscans from 1260 to 1263.(2) Dr. Maier provides different dates in the chronology of Gilbert's life although both Dr. Maier and Dr. Macy agree on the essential points. It is also possible that Guilbert took part in St. Louis IX first crusade and very likely that he was involved with the preaching of the cross for this expedition.
