| Scholar Herbert E.J. Cowdrey.... [Continued] H.E.J. Cowdrey's work on Pope Urban II's preaching of the First Crusade is among his most noteworthy scholarship. Cowdrey argued that the Pope's primary concern in launching the First Crusade was the deliverance of Jerusalem, rather than concern over the plight of eastern Christians or bettering relations with the Byzantine Empire. For Cowdrey, the capture and control of the Holy Land was the real purpose of the crusade.
