| The Historia Albigensis was written by Peter of Les Vaux de Cerney, an enthusiastic supporter of the Albigensian Crusade. It is likely he traveled with the army of Simon de Montfort and witnessed many of the events he describes. The first part of the work dates from between 1212 and 1218. The work's author, Peter, was a young monk at the abbey of Les Vaux de Cernay, where his abbot and uncle Guy took part in preaching against the Cathar heresy before and during the Crusade. Peter several times accompanies his uncle, during which he witnessed first hand many of the accounts he records. The work is notable for the author's hostility to the Cathar "heretics." The original text was written in Latin. |
