Song of the Cathar Wars
The Song of the Cathar Wars purports to tell of events from 1204 to 1218 in the south of what is today France. The work is particularly useful as a source for the Albigensian Crusade. The work, originally written in Old Provencal, was recorded in two parts and by two authors. The first part is believed to have been authored by William of Tudela, a supporter of the Albigensian Crusade. It is unknown who authored the second part of the work, but its tone is decidedly more in favor of those resisting the crusaders, while not specifically embracing the "heresy" of the Cathars, also known as Albigensians. As a result, the second half of the work is especially valuable as a source because of the limited availability of sources from the side that lost. Much of the focus of the work is on the region of Languedoc.
